We know the hotels here in Omaha tend to raise their rates during Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend, but they may have gone too far this year.Warren Buffett has told the Omaha World Herald that it seems the hotels are taking advantage of shareholders. He even went so far as to consider a shareholder’s suggestion to move next year’s meeting to Dallas.
“Omaha’s No. 1, but I do listen to my shareholders,” Buffett said. “If I hear from enough of them, I’ve got to think about an alternative, and next year (Dallas) would be a logical location. We would attract way more people than we do in Omaha.” (Omaha World Herald, March 28, 2014)No!!!! Not Dallas! (Signed, the friendly folks at Borsheims who love hosting shareholders each spring!)

And here are some tips from the locals about hotel rooms.
- Look outside the Old Market area. Yes, you would need to have transportation, but we do run shuttles all Saturday and you might get to explore a different part of town.
- Try to rent a home or apartment via airbnb or vrbo or craigslist. I was looking into this yesterday, and a lot of the places are already booked for this year but there might be a few options on there.
- Remember that Council Bluffs is SUPER close to Omaha. As in, right across the river. Try the hotels and casino hotels there.
I hope that helps. And I’m sure that a few stern words from Mr. Buffett to hotel managers may help with the rate increases, too. At least for the 2015 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting!
