So you want to eat a steak…

Saturday, May 6th, 2017

Mark this one as the 3rd most frequently asked question at our shareholder information booth at Borsheims.

“Where can I get a good steak in Omaha?”

Everyone knows about Gorat’s – since that’s Warren Buffett’s favorite steak house – but it’s usually totally booked during Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend.

I usually ask shareholders a few questions about what type of experience they’re looking for. A traditional old Omaha steakhouse experience where you get pasta and baked potato as a side dish? A more updated experience? A quicker place or a more expensive sit-down place? There are so many great options and I love to talk about food.

(Here’s our list of restaurants by area of city. And here’s a past post discussing food. Here’s another. And now I’m hungry.)

Our fantastic local food critic at the Omaha World Herald must get the same question because she put out a list of steakhouses and hot new restaurants for shareholders. Click here to read her list.

And while it’s not a steakhouse, her list does mention Block 16 which is a MUST VISIT when I talk to out-of-towners. Delicious, affordable, and innovative. One of my personal favorites!

Today is the day: Call Gorat’s!

Monday, April 3rd, 2017

If you want in on one of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders favorite Omaha traditions, make sure to call today and reserve your table at Gorat’s for dinner during Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend.A photo of the exterior of Gorat's steakhouse

Here’s what Warren Buffett says about the event:
One of Warren’s favorite steakhouses will open Sunday for a private shareholder event. Dinner will be served from 1-10pm. To get a reservation, call 402/551-3733 starting on April 3 (but not before). If Gorat’s happens to be booked on Sunday, try them on any other evening you are in town. They are open Monday – Thursday 11am – 9pm, Friday 11am – 10pm and Saturday from 5 – 10pm. Reservations are suggested and can be made any time for Thursday, Friday or Saturday of the shareholders weekend.
We have never been able to attend the Sunday event at Gorat’s (we’re still wrapping up our Sunday fun at Borsheims at that time), but we’ve eaten at Gorat’s a number of times. It’s great – and sitting a table or two away from Warren Buffett is the cherry on the cake (or the cherry in your root beer float, if that’s more your style).

But call soon – the tables fill up quickly!

Wait… What Happened to Root Beer Floats at Piccolos?

Friday, April 1st, 2016

piccolosWe didn’t neglect Piccolos when we talked about making reservations at Gorats Steakhouse earlier today.

We have bad news.

Piccolos, Warren Buffett’s favorite spot for root beer floats (among other things), closed over the winter. It was one of a handful of original Omaha steakhouses, all started by one Omaha family decades ago.

The Omaha World Herald’s columnist Mike Kelly wrote a nice piece about the closing, including memories of Warren Buffett and a lot of the famous guests Warren would bring in to the restaurant with him. There were groups of college students, heads of companies, and famous folks like New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. Buffett would instruct each of them to order the biggest root beer float for dessert – saying the smaller size was for sissies.

Piccolos’ owners would also regularly pack Mr. Buffett a lunch if he was heading out on a long flight. Always the root beer float. Sometimes chicken parmesan or chicken noodle soup. He loved the hash browns. (Think he put Heinz Ketchup on them?) I’m sure Mr. Buffett is in mourning as much as the rest of the Omaha crowd that loved the old steakhouse.

You shouldn’t fret, though. I know where else you can get a root beer float – and this one is a Berkshire Hathaway company! Dairy Queen does not have one on the menu – but I know from experience that you can order one! They’re not super complicated to make.

Make Your Restaurant Reservations Now!

Friday, April 1st, 2016

Gorat'sToday is the day! If you’re hoping to get in to eat at Gorat’s on the Sunday or Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders weekend (or any of the other days that weekend), you can call for reservations starting now.

Here’s the line from Warren Buffett’s crew at Berkshire Hathaway headquarters:
One of Warren’s favorite steakhouses will open Sunday for a private shareholder event. Dinner will be served from 1-10pm. To get a reservation, call 402/551-3733 starting on April 1 (but not before).
We love Gorat’s – as does Mr. Buffett. But we also love a lot of other restaurants in town. And no matter what type of cuisine you’re looking for, it might be a good idea to start making reservations now. We have a great list of area restaurants here. It’s broken down by area of town or cuisine and is a pretty good glimpse of what we have to offer here. I also love to make personal recommendations, so feel free to ask and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Omaha a “Great City for Food Lovers” says Wall Street Journal

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

Berkshire Hathaway shareholders who spend any time eating at restaurants in Omaha can attest to what the Wall Street Journal announced today – Omaha is a great city for food lovers!

In an article searching for great restaurants in small cities, Omaha was selected as one of the six best. In the company of San Antonio, Columbus, Sacramento, Raleigh-Durham and Spokane, Omaha was listed as having great food in six vital contemporary restaurant genres.

An Omaha teen snaps a selfie in July 2014 while Warren Buffett and Paul McCartney enjoy ice cream in the Dundee neighborhood of Omaha.

Among the Wall Street Journal’s picks for Omaha are a few that the Buffett family has been known to frequent. Dario Schicke’s two Dundee restaurants (Dario’s Brasserie and Avoli Osteria) are both delicious, innovative, and a place you can occasionally catch a glimpse of Warren Buffett or Susie Buffett.  Sometimes, they dine there with famous friends… like Paul McCartney, and then go for ice cream down the street!

If you want a definite dining experience with Warren Buffett, Wednesday, April 1, is the day to act! That’s the first chance shareholders have to get reservations at Gorat’s during Berkshire Hathaway weekend. Gorat’s steakhouse is a longtime Buffett favorite, and he will eat there on Sunday evening. He says he’ll also eat at Piccolo’s, where he raves about the root beer floats! Here’s the section from Buffett’s letter to shareholders:

Gorat’s and Piccolo’s will again be open exclusively for Berkshire shareholders on Sunday, May 3rd. Both will be serving until 10 p.m., with Gorat’s opening at 1 p.m. and Piccolo’s opening at 4 p.m. These restaurants are my favorites, and I will eat at both of them on Sunday evening. Remember: To make a reservation at Gorat’s, call 402-551-3733 on April 1st (but not before); for Piccolo’s, call 402-346-2865. At Piccolo’s, order a giant root beer float for dessert. Only sissies get the small one.

So make your reservations now – either for one of those steakhouses or for one of our hundreds of other amazing restaurants. We have a partial listing of restaurants here, but if you have a specific restaurant question or request, leave me a comment and I’m happy to provide a personal suggestion. In Omaha, we love food!

Want a behind-the-scenes look at Berkshire Weekend Preparations?

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

If you’ve stepped into Borsheims, Nebraska Furniture Mart, or several other Omaha businesses in the past week, you’ve noticed it.

It’s a busy hum.

It’s a palpable sense of excitement.

It’s an eagerness for next week to go ahead and get here already!

It’s the week leading up to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend, and things are getting a little crazy around Omaha.

After all, it takes some work to prepare for 35,000+ of your favorite friends to come visit you.

The Omaha World Herald wrote about what it takes to get ready for the weekend in today’s paper.

Some of my favorite parts:

– Gorats finding a place for 1500 pounds of steak.

– How much root beer Piccolos goes through during Berkshire weekend.

– Nebraska Furniture Mart drilling hundreds of holes in their parking lot to hold the tents.

– And a sneak peek at what is bound to be the hot seller at Borsheims this year, a Warren Buffet signed diamond!!!

We are counting down the hours at this point and we cannot wait. In fact, this time next week, Warren Buffett will be selling diamonds and other jewelry at Borsheims to a few dozen very lucky shareholders.

We’ll have lots of information for you on the blog this week, so stay tuned.

And if you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them. Just leave a comment and I will get right back to you.

Let’s Talk Food, Berkshire Hathaway shareholders

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Two weeks from today, you guys!

Two weeks until we get to have thousands of our friends and shareholders visit Omaha from all over the world. It is always so much fun, and it feels like it really came quickly this year. (Maybe that’s because the weather has been so chilly here lately. Don’t worry – we are warming it up before you arrive!)

Anyway, I know when I’m a few weeks out from an event, I start thinking about food. That’s normal, right?!?

steakI mean, who wouldn’t start salivating over a big juicy steaks a couple of weeks out? Especially if you don’t have regular access to our fine Omaha steaks (and Omaha Steaks) on a regular basis.

Warren Buffett always talks about his favorite spots. Gorat’s, which was renovated and under new ownership last year, is a staple for Mr. Buffett and his fans. In fact, he encouraged shareholders to call a few weeks ago to snag their reservations for the Sunday of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend. They are likely booked up for Sunday, when Mr. Buffett will stop by, but you can always try to get reservations another day.

Mr. Buffett’s other favorite is Piccolo Pete’s, where he swears by the large root beer float. They, too, are expecting to see Mr. Buffett on Berkshire Sunday, so they are probably booked for reservations. You should still call them to try to get in. Root beer floats are never a bad thing.

Both Gorat’s and Piccolo Pete’s are old school steakhouses. The kind where you get a hunk of meat, a big potato, usually an iceberg lettuce salad and some pasta on the side. It is filling, delicious, and makes you feel like you stepped back a few decades in time (and in terms of price! They’re both very reasonably priced). Other old-school steakhouse favorites here in Omaha, and personal favorites of mine, include The Drover, Brother Sebastian’s and Cascio’s Steakhouse to name a few.

The Omaha World Herald reviewed our old steakhouses last summer and found Brother Sebastian’s to be the best. Plus it’s a really cool atmosphere.

If you want a more contemporary steak eating experience, Omaha has you covered, too. Or really any food. Check out our restaurant section for a guide to Omaha eats, sorted by area of town and some by cuisine.

And really, I love to talk food. So if you have any specific requests or questions, comment away and I will be happy to guide you in the right direction!

New Gorat’s Awaits Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Berkshire Hathaway shareholders attending this year’s annual shareholders weekend will notice a fresh new look at an old Omaha steakhouse.

Warren Buffett’s standby steakhouse, Gorat’s, is under new ownership and has been “de-decorated” in the words of new owner Gene Dunn.

Dunn says he restored the restaurant to how it was originally designed. That involved removing paneling and dropped ceilings, uncovering an old fireplace and windows and discovering some beautiful art deco ceilings.

It really is a fresh new look for the restaurant that used to be a house.

And the menu has been freshened up as well!

For starters, the restaurant now serves world-famous Omaha Steaks.

Take a peek at the new menu here.

New owner Gene Dunn is a long-time restaurant owner in Omaha. He also is the husband of Borsheims President & CEO Susan Jacques.

To make reservations at Gorat’s during Berkshire Hathaway weekend, call (402)551-3733 on Monday, April 1st. Mr. Buffett says he plans to eat there and at Piccolo’s on Sunday, May 5th.

In the meantime, take a sneak peek of the changes at Gorat’s in this slideshow:

What Are You Eating Five Weeks From Now?

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Do you know what you are eating five weeks from now?

If you are attending Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend in Omaha May 3 – 5, you might want to start thinking about it! Some of Warren Buffett’s most popular restaurants book up very quickly. So if you want to dine with the Oracle of Omaha, you may want to start thinking food.

Warren Buffett addresses his favorite restaurants in his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders:

Gorat’s and Piccolo’s will again be open exclusively for Berkshire shareholders on Sunday, May 5th. Both will be serving until 10 p.m., with Gorat’s opening at 1 p.m. and Piccolo’s opening at 4 p.m. These restaurants are my favorites, and I will eat at both of them on Sunday evening. Remember: To make a reservation at Gorat’s, call 402-551-3733 on April 1st (but not before) and at Piccolo’s call 402-342-9038. At Piccolo’s, order a giant root beer float for dessert. Only sissies get the small one. (I once saw Bill Gates polish off two of the giant variety after a full-course dinner; that’s when I knew he would make a great director.)

Warren Buffett knows good food. And he knows the new owners of Gorat’s well! We will give you an exclusive look inside the newly remodeled Gorat’s in a coming blog post. But for now, figure out where you want to dine (after you’re exhausted from shopping at Borsheims all day Sunday) and make your reservations. You don’t want to get to Omaha and not have a great steak!

Make your Restaurant Reservations for Berkshire Hathaway weekend

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

I’m sure by this point, out-of-towners have already booked their flights and hotels. Everyone should now focus their attention to making restaurant reservations for the weekend. With more than 35,000 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders here for the weekend, the restaurant scene can be a little packed.

We are a great resource for that! Check out our restaurants section on our website… under Around Omaha or by clicking here.

We categorized the restaurants by cuisine and location in town.

Of course, you should plan on eating at Borsheims during our Friday shareholder cocktail party and Sunday’s shareholder-only brunch. They are free to all shareholders.

Nebraska Furniture Mart offers a barbeque for shareholders on Saturday for a $5 fee.

One of Warren Buffett’s favorite steakhouses, Gorat’s, has a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder-only day on Sunday. The opened for reservations on April 1, so they may already be booked. You can try them at 402-551-3733.

One of Warren’s other favorite steakhouses, Piccolo’s, is taking reservations as well. Their number is 402-342-9038.

Happy eating!
