Plan ahead for Sunday: Bridge, Ping Pong, and Magic at Borsheims

Saturday, May 6th, 2017

Sunday of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend is dedicated to shopping, brunching, and games! We have a few changes this year, so even if you’re a regular for what I think is the most relaxing, fun day of the weekend, read below if you want in on the action:

BRIDGE Bridge has moved this year to the area of Regency Court by the waterfalls. If you’re looking at Borsheims, take the long hallway to the left of the store’s entrance and you’ll see the bridge area. We have very limited viewing areas for bridge this year, so prepare yourself for a crowd and try to go with the flow.

If you want to play bridge, you are welcome to play but you must already know how to play the game. It helps if you have your own foursome put together, but if you’re solo or short a player or two, come to the sign-up table at bridge we’ll try to get a group together for you. Bridge usually begins at 1pm, but a few people have been known to start playing earlier. We will have the sign-up sheet ready at noon and if you definitely want a seat, that’s when you should arrive. The experts, Sharon Osberg and Bob Hamann usually arrive between noon and 1pm.
Ariel Hsing plays Warren Buffett and Bill Gates

TABLE TENNIS Mr. Buffett asked Ariel Hsing, Olympic Table Tennis star, back to Borsheims for another shareholders weekend! We expect her to start playing around 1pm. Shareholders can form a line to play her (usually to three points, which goes quickly!). We will provide paddles and balls, but if you are partial to your own paddle, you are welcome to bring it. Ms. Hsing usually stays for a few hours and rarely gets beat, but you’re welcome to try! In past years, Mr. Buffett and Bill Gates lead off the play with her.

MAGICIAN Norman Beck is an excellent magician and will do tricks in front of (and to) any shareholder near where he’s performing. He will be located near Williams Sonoma, so be camped out there if you’re hoping to catch his show.

Hope you can join us for the fun!

Have $1 Million to Spend at Borsheims? Here’s how!

Thursday, May 4th, 2017

It would be horrible if you were walking around Borsheims this week with $1 million in your pocket and no idea how to spend it.

We’re here to help you part with your money – and to receive something stunning in return!

So here are a few ideas that are all right around $1 million retail. Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, of course, get a discount and will have plenty of money left to buy other fun souvenirs from the weekend!

First up, how about a just-over 15-carat cushion cut diamond. It’s set in platinum with another 1+ carats of trapezoid diamonds surrounding it.

If your fingers are already laden with diamonds, perhaps a diamond pendant necklace is in order. It’s a 7.60 carat pear diamond set in 18k yellow gold. It retails for just under $1 million.

Maybe you prefer a necklace to a pendant? Hard to argue with 55.26 carats of diamonds in this platinum Diamond Riviera necklace that retails for $1 million exactly.

“But I prefer my diamonds yellow,” you say? Okay, we have a 20.21 carat radiant cut fancy yellow diamond ring that’s just a smidge over $1 million.

But again, that’s all retail pricing. Shareholders get a bargain!

These amazing pieces are all from one of our favorite vendors, Rahaminov. They have a spread of jewelry priced below and far above $1 million, and it’s all in our Luxe Salon during Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend. Stop in today and let us help you part with your million dollars!

News Release: New, Exclusive Diamond Options for Berkshire Shareholders

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

Berkshire Shareholders Presented with New, Exclusive Diamond Options

Omaha, NE – The thousands of people visiting Borsheims during this weekend’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder weekend will have more diamond options than ever before – including diamonds that will help build a well in southern Africa, diamonds grown in a lab, and diamonds featuring the signature of Warren Buffett.

Borsheims has partnered with trusted mining company Leo Schachter to exclusively offer Kalahari Dream Diamonds, where each diamond sold benefits communities in the Kalahari Desert in the countries of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. The diamonds are ethically mined and responsibly prepared by exacting artisans and available only at Borsheims. During Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend, the sale of each Kalahari Dream diamond will go toward building a well in a village in Botswana that does not have regular access to water. Customers can choose between loose diamonds, pendants, earrings, and rings in the Kalahari Dream Diamond collection.

For customers concerned about the environmental impact of diamond mining, Borsheims is among the first independent jewelry stores in the world to offer lab-grown diamonds and lab-grown diamond jewelry. The diamonds, which are chemically and optically identical to diamonds formed in the earth, are grown in a lab using a process similar to what happens in nature but with higher heat and pressure to speed up the growth of the diamonds. The lab-grown diamonds are priced around 30% less than a diamond formed in the earth.

Another one-of-a-kind option for diamond lovers at Borsheims is a limited edition of Warren Buffett signed diamonds. Each year since 2014, Borsheims has offered shareholders a small collection of loose diamonds inscribed with Mr. Buffett’s signature. The diamonds, part of Borsheims’ Signature Diamond collection, are mined and polished in Canada. The diamonds sell quickly each year, with customers always asking for more. This year, each Warren Buffett signed diamond comes with a Sarine Digital Experience, allowing the customer to use their phone to scan the QR code and then view and loupe the diamond and Warren Buffett’s signature on their phone.

Borsheims President & CEO Karen Goracke says providing these exclusive diamond options stays true to Borsheims history. “Borsheims has always been known for its huge selection of jewelry and our attention to our customers desires, and these diamond options are another step in that direction,” Goracke said. “We are embracing shareholders and customers who are increasingly socially and environmentally conscious and who want the latest technology in every aspect of their lives.”

We would love to have you in the store to look at all our jewelry, watch, and fine gift options. If you are covering the events at Borsheims this weekend, here’s what to expect:

FRIDAY, May 5- Shareholder-Only Cocktail Party from 6pm to 9pm
  • Media should enter through the event’s northeast entrance of the parking lot (near Evereve) and must have a Berkshire Hathaway issued press credential to be admitted.
  • Just like shareholders, media will need to go through the metal detectors and have their bags checked before being allowed in
  • Please check in with the media check-in desk in the center court of the mall once you have entered.
  • Media is welcome to cover shareholders both inside and outside of Borsheims, but will need to be escorted due to security restrictions
SUNDAY, MAY 7 – Shareholder-Only Shopping Day from 9am to 4pm
  • Media should enter through the event’s northeast entrance of the parking lot (near Evereve) and must have a Berkshire Hathaway issued press credential to be admitted.
  • Just like shareholders, media will need to go through the metal detectors and have their bags checked before being allowed in
  • Media is welcome to talk with shareholders inside and outside of Borsheims, but will need to be escorted due to security restrictions.
  • Please check in with the media check-in desk in the center court of the mall once you have entered.
  • We expect Warren Buffett to arrive around 1pm to play bridge with friends and table tennis against Ariel Hsing. You should arrive early if you want to cover either event as it will be packed and Mr. Buffett has been known to arrive early.
  • The Bridge gaming area will be very congested. Please plan ahead and arrive early to secure an appropriate spot.

You already know you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Instagram. But to make it easier for us all to communicate with each other, please use the official hashtag #BRK2017.

Not only does using the hashtag allow everyone interested in the weekend to communicate with each other more easily, but it also will take your Twitter and Instagram posts and broadcast them to the two huge screens up at Borsheims. See your tweets or pics up on the big screen by using the hashtag Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I look forward to the online chatting!

Rare, Collectible, Heirloom Jewelry at Borsheims

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

In addition to the incredible recently-mined diamonds at Borsheims for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend, we are also bringing in a selection of rare, collectible jewels from Siegelson, New York.

We’re talking jewelry and artwork about a century old and worn and owned by the elites and near-royalty of the time.

If you love heirloom pieces, these are must see jewels this week. If you really love them, they’re must-buy pieces!

I want to highlight a few pieces in the collection:

This is the Mughal Heart – a heart-shaped Golconda Diamond necklace.

The center heart-shaped diamond weighs in at more than 30 carats. It is a D-color, internally flawless, type IIa diamond and an extremely rare gem.

It was owned for years by the Drexel family, a prominent British-American family. They were bankers and financiers and founded Drexel University. The heart was passed through a few generations of the Drexel family, including to socialite Noreen Drexel who wore it on my occasions, including at the Tiffany Ball where she was photographed chatting with John and Jackie Kennedy.

I love this diamond bow brooch from 1904. Made by Cartier, it is an openwork millenarian ribbon bow brooch with floral and foliate motifs, set with old European-cut and rose-cut diamonds. The diamonds total more than 43 carats and the brooch measures about 4.5 inches across.

A very different piece is this Art Deco Retrograde Colored Gemstone and Diamond Gazelle Clock. Siegelson tells us this clock is an incredible example of the retrograde movement perfected in the 19th century. This clock has the hour hand rotating for twelve hours before a spring brings it back to the initial twelve, while the longer minute hand operates similarly over a 60 minute interval.

The sculptures are three gazelles made of aquamarine, resting on an agate and lapis lazuli platform above a fountain with rock crystal waterfalls cascading into an agate pool. It’s an incredibly unique piece and a rarity to find one this extraordinary for sale.

These unbelievable pieces – and more – are arriving in store this week and will all be on hand by Friday to greet the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. And they’re all for sale! Come and in to see these heirloom pieces for yourself. Maybe you’ll fall in love and take one home with you!

Weather Forecast for Berkshire Hathaway Weekend

Monday, May 1st, 2017

I am so glad this past weekend was not Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend.

It was rainy. And cold. And windy. And miserable. And a few miles outside of Omaha, it was snowy.

This is not how Nebraska usually looks on May 1st. Photo Courtesy Antelope County News.

But we promise things are looking up! By the time most shareholders arrive into Omaha on Friday, we’ll be back to our usual spring loveliness around here!

The forecast from our good friends at KETV (the local ABC affiliate) shows some perfect weather just in time for shareholders to arrive.

70s and sunny sound amazing – especially after all the rain and nasty weather. It even looks dry – so hopefully we won’t have a bunch of soaked shareholders this year.

Pack accordingly, Berkies! We’ll see you in a few days!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Berkshire!

Thursday, April 27th, 2017

This is a picture from a few years back, but I feel like we’re getting there at Borsheims! No shareholders sporting passes around their necks yet, but I was just on the sales floor and things are definitely starting to look Berkshire-ready.

Let me give you a little tour of how things are shaping up at Borsheims.

The gift gallery is quickly filling with new and exciting pieces. These sculptures and home decor by Michael Aram are stunning. The gold is absolutely beautiful and check out one of our favorite pieces:

It’s Icarus – known for flying too close to the sun. He’s displayed in front of a gorgeous painting by Michael Aram. It’s worth checking out in person.

Our Judith Leiber purses are elegantly squeezed into the display case so we can fit the most in for our shareholders. I love this frog prince.

The gift gallery isn’t getting all the attention. We have a new area in the store designated for Monica Rich Kosann jewelry. It’s become a fast favorite among customers.

My favorite Monica Rich Kosann pieces are the lockets. They’re lovely – not too flashy but absolutely perfect.

The sales floor is ready and we’re packing in more jewelry by the day, with some of the biggest and most amazing pieces arriving next week just in time for shareholders. You can beat the rush and shop now, and don’t forget the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders discount period starts on Monday at Borsheims!

What Jewelry, Watch, Gift Vendors will be at Borsheims?

Tuesday, April 25th, 2017

Borsheims is known as one of the largest independent jewelry stores in the nation. That’s based on square footage of the store itself as well as the wide inventory of jewelry, watches, and fine gifts carried in the store.

Each spring, we carefully go through our list of jewelry, watch, and gift vendors to invite a select few to join us for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend.

Those vendors then bring in their absolute best goods for the weekend. We’re talking art-museum quality jewelry pieces, the first glimpse at a new and highly-anticipated watch, and one-of-a-kind artwork for your home or office.

This year, we have another spectacular rundown of vendors joining us for the weekend. You can access the entire list of our vendors here. We have dozens of additional brands available in the store, but we cannot possibly fit all of our vendors and all their extra goodies in the store at once so we do have to limit which lines can actually send vendors and additional merchandise for the weekend.

Do you like this year’s list? Are there any vendors you want us to include in next year’s list? Or any lines that we don’t carry that you’d like to see in store at Borsheims? Let me know in the comments!

What to Expect at the 2017 BRK Shareholders Weekend

Saturday, February 25th, 2017

It is officially Berkshire Hathaway season here in Omaha!

Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend is approaching, and the excitement really kicks off when Warren Buffett outlines the weekend in his annual letter to shareholders. (It was just released an hour ago – You can read the letter here.)

Here is what you need to know for the 2017 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders weekend:
  • It is May 5, 6, and 7 in Omaha.
  • Yahoo Finance will live-stream the meeting again for those who cannot travel to Omaha. (Warren Buffett says 1.1 million viewers watched it live last year, with another 11.5 million replays. Most people thanked him, saying they were too old, too thrifty, or their religion kept them from attending in person).
  • Shopping at the CenturyLink Center on Friday and Saturday was HUGE, and it will again be open on Friday from noon to 5pm and Saturday from 6am to 5pm. I know our team at Borsheims has ordered extra items this year!
  • The official schedule of events is found here, but Mr. Buffett’s letter details a few more offerings, like the newspaper toss and what specific books you should purchase at the Bookworm’s booth.
  • Nebraska Furniture Mart will offer discounts in its Kansas City and Dallas area stores for the first time this year to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. Shareholders will still need to show proof of ownership to get the discount.
  • We love this special shout-out from Mr. Buffett’s daughter regarding Borsheims:
At Borsheims, we will again have two shareholder-only events. The first will be a cocktail reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 5th. The second, the main gala, will be held on Sunday, May 7th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, we will remain open until 6 p.m. Remember, the more you buy, the more you save (or so my daughter tells me when we visit the store)
We can’t wait for everyone to come see us, and we totally agree that the more you buy at Borsheims, the more you save! You can start your saving now by shopping online. We even have some of our 2017 Berkshire Hathaway gear ready to sell, including a whiskey set, a Montblanc pen with Warren’s signature, and dozens of other Berkshire Hathaway items.
