Playing the Games at Borsheims During Berkshire Sunday

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

In addition to the delicious brunch, the amazing shopping and the fun reunions with other Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, one of the highlights at Borsheims during Sunday’s Berkshire Hathaway shareholder-only shopping day is the games.

We bring in experts at bridge, chess, magic and table tennis to amuse and amaze.

Here’s how you can take part on Sunday (May 5):

BRIDGE Bridge is again upstairs this year on the second floor of Regency Court. Anyone is welcome to play as long as they know how to play bridge. It helps if you already have your foursome put together, but if you’re solo come upstairs and sign up and we’ll try to get a group together for you. Bridge usually begins at 1pm, but a few people have been known to start playing earlier. I say get there by noon at the latest if you definitely want a seat. The experts, Sharon Osberg and Bob Hamann usually arrive between noon and 1pm. We do not know if Warren Buffett or Bill Gates will play bridge this year.

CHESS This is really amazing to watch. Patrick Wolff is a two-time U.S. Chess Champion and Grandmaster. He will play six people at the same time while blindfolded. It’s incredible to see. If you want to be one of the six people to try to beat Patrick, you can sign up at the Media/Info kiosk in the center of Regency Court starting at noon. At 1pm, we will take the list over to the chess area and draw the names of the six people who will play. You must be there at 1pm when your name is called in order to have a seat.

TABLE TENNIS Mr. Buffett asked Ariel Hsing, Olympic Table Tennis star, back to Borsheims for another shareholders weekend! We are expecting her to start playing around 1pm. Shareholders can form a queue to try their table tennis skills against the young champ. We will provide paddles and balls, but if you are partial to one you are welcome to bring it. She usually stays for a few hours and rarely gets beat, but you’re welcome to try! We do not know if Mr. Buffett or Mr. Gates will play against Ariel Hsing this year.

MAGICIAN Norman Beck is an excellent magician and will do tricks in front of (and to) any shareholder near where he’s performing. He is usually located near Williams Sonoma, so be camped out there if you’re hoping to catch his show.

Olympian vs. Oracle of Omaha? Only Berkshire Hathaway Weekend!

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

She’s a late addition to the roster of events for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend 2013, but Ariel Hsing is no stranger to Berkshire shareholders.

Here is the young Olympic table tennis star last year, taking on all shareholders who dared!

Ariel Hsing plays Warren Buffett and Bill Gates

Olympian Ariel Hsing plays Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in Table Tennis at the 2012 Shareholders Meeting

We received word from Warren Buffett’s office that Ariel Hsing has agreed to come back and play shareholders at Borsheims once again! She will be in the center court of Regency Court on Sunday during the shareholder-only shopping day (May 5). She will begin to play around 1pm and although in the past couple of years she has played both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates (often at the same time!), we are not sure if the billionaires are taking her on this year. We know Mr. Buffett is busy selling jewelry at Borsheims at 1pm, so maybe if he reaches his $2 million sales goal early enough, he’ll get in a few hits of the paddle with this Olympian.

Welcome back Ariel! We are glad to have you in Omaha again and excited to see you defeat a series of shareholders for yet another year!

Warren Buffett, Bill Gates Play an Olympian

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

How many billionaires does it take to beat Olympic Table Tennis player Ariel Hsing?

We know one (Warren Buffett) didn’t beat her last year.

Two at the same time (Warren Buffett and Bill Gates) can’t beat her either!

What if they used a giant paddle?

I’m pretty sure the Olympian still won. We are confident with this type of training, she’ll come home with the Gold Medal this summer!

The Wall Street Journal has a great article today on Ariel Hsing and her special relationships with “Uncle Warren” and “Uncle Bill”.

That would be Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. She has played – and beat – both of them in her Olympic sport, table tennis.

Read the piece for some insight into their relationship and what makes them all so special.

Playing Warren Buffett’s Games at Borsheims

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

They really are Warren Buffett’s games. Everyone knows Mr. Buffett loves bridge and invites two of his buddies and bridge experts back year after year to take on shareholders. He thinks Patrick Wolff is a chess genius. Magician Norman Beck always entertains the crowd. And who else would invite a 16-year-old Olympian to play him in table tennis.

So you want in on the action, too? Here’s what you need to know to participate in the games this Sunday (May 6) at Borsheims.

BRIDGE
Bridge has been moved upstairs this year to the second floor of Regency Court. CHESS

TABLE TENNIS
We expect Mr. Buffett to be the first person to play Olympian Ariel Hsing in table tennis, and we anticipate that will be around 1pm. After that, shareholders can form a queue to try their table tennis skills against the young champ. We will provide paddles and balls, but if you are partial to one you are welcome to bring it. She usually stays for a few hours and rarely gets beat, but you’re welcome to try!

MAGICIAN
Norman Beck is an excellent magician and will do tricks in front of (and to) any shareholder near where he’s performing. He is usually located near Williams Sonoma, so be camped out there if you’re hoping to catch his show.

He’s played her before and now, Warren Buffett wants a rematch! Mr. Buffett has invited table tennis champ Ariel Hsing back to Borsheims during Berkshire Hathaway weekend. During the 2010 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting, Mr. Buffett brought a giant paddle to play with Ms. Hsing. Who knows what he’ll bring this time!
