Sunday Funday at Borsheims

Sunday, May 1st, 2016

Sunday is such a fun day at Borsheims. It’s really my favorite day of Berkshire shareholders weekend. It’s a little more relaxed than the rest, and we have all these fun games happening in Regency Court – right outside of Borsheims.

Back by popular demand… my helpful hints to playing the games today:

BRIDGE Bridge is again upstairs this year on the second floor of Regency Court. Anyone is welcome to play as long as they know how to play bridge. It helps if you already have your foursome put together, but if you’re solo come upstairs and sign up and we’ll try to get a group together for you. Bridge usually begins at 1pm, but a few people have been known to start playing earlier. We will have the sign-up sheet ready at noon and if you definitely want a seat, that’s when you should arrive. The experts, Sharon Osberg and Bob Hamann usually arrive between noon and 1pm. In his letter to shareholders, Warren Buffett says he will play them and hopes to “have Ajit and Charlie there also.”

TABLE TENNIS Mr. Buffett asked Ariel Hsing, Olympic Table Tennis star, back to Borsheims for another shareholders weekend! We are expecting her to start playing around 1pm. Shareholders can form a queue to try their table tennis skills against the young champ. We will provide paddles and balls, but if you are partial to your own paddle, you are welcome to bring it. Ms. Hsing usually stays for a few hours and rarely gets beat, but you’re welcome to try! We expect Mr. Buffett and Bill Gates to lead off the play with her.

MAGICIAN Norman Beck is an excellent magician and will do tricks in front of (and to) any shareholder near where he’s performing. He is usually located near Williams Sonoma, so be camped out there if you’re hoping to catch his show.

Hope you can join us for the fun!

Ready for Table Tennis at #BRK2016? Borsheims Champ is!

Friday, April 8th, 2016

Any Berkshire Hathaway shareholder who has been a part of Sunday’s festivities at Borsheims probably can tell you the name of an Olympic Table Tennis player.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett concede their table tennis match to Olympian Ariel Hsing during the 2015 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders weekend.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett concede their table tennis match to Olympian Ariel Hsing during the 2015 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders weekend.

Ariel Hsing has been attending the shareholders weekend for years as a special guest of Warren Buffett. She even spends a few hours on Sunday outside Borsheims playing table tennis against Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and any other shareholder brave enough to take her on.

And she doesn’t lose.

But there are always several table tennis enthusiasts who try to beat her each year. This year, Borsheims held an in-house tournament to see if one of our own can defeat an Olympian at her own game.

Check out the winner’s slow-mo winning shot!

That ping pong pro is Borsheims Systems and Network Engineer, Tommy Luong. Here’s what he says about how he learned table tennis:

“The first time I picked up a paddle was around age 9 or 10. We lived in California at the time. My father had just laid down tons of concrete in our humongous backyard (Do-It-Yourself project that took forever). When we were finally done, although it looked nice, it felt like a big empty parking lot. So we christened all that flat concrete with a ping pong table. I learned how to play from my dad and practiced with my Uncles. Played a lot up until high school and then I stopped. Didn’t play again till a few years ago when I found out our church had a table. Now every time I pass by a pong table I feel the need to play it…can’t resist a good slam.”

Tommy’s pretty good – but he’ll need to practice quite a bit to beat Ariel Hsing! Look for the match-up Sunday, May 1, outside of Borsheims. Ariel will play Warren Buffett (and likely Bill Gates) first, around 1pm – and then take on any others who dare including Tommy. If you want to join the fun, just get in line Sunday afternoon. We provide the paddles, balls, and Olympian!

Photos of Berkshire Hathaway 50th Anniversary

Monday, May 4th, 2015

Whew! We made it!

Our fun-filled Berkshire Hathaway weekend has wrapped up and we’re in full Mother’s Day swing at Borsheims.

(Which seems like a great time to remind you that Mother’s Day is this Sunday and that your shareholder discount is good through Saturday at Borsheims and that we have a ton of great stuff for moms!)

Anyway, we’re enjoying reviewing the Berkshire Hathaway 50th Anniversary weekend through photos at our Flickr site.

You should take a look, too! See if you can spot yourself in some of the shots, and feel free to download the photos and use them for your own purposes. Here’s a slideshow of our shots from the big table tennis match-up between Warren Buffett and Bill Gates and Olympian Ariel Hsing.

Again, thanks for coming to Borsheims to celebrate 50 years of a profitable partnership! We start planning for next year today!

Thank You Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates. Thank You Shareholders.

What an amazing day at Borsheims!

We had two legendary philanthropists, businessmen, and overall amazing humans visit us.Buffett and Gates play ping pong

They may not be the best table tennis players in the world (that title may rest with Olympian Ariel Hsing, who played Buffett and Gates and then Berkshire shareholders for nearly two hours Sunday afternoon), but Warren Buffett and Bill Gates were a delight to have at Borsheims once again.

Gates, Buffett, Hsing They played table tennis and then sat down for a few hands of bridge with bridge expert Sharon Osberg and several other shareholders.

We feel so fortunate to be a part of the Berkshire Hathaway family every day of the year, but nothing reminds us more of our good fortune than the Sunday of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend.

Thanks to all our shareholders who travel from all over the world to visit with us, shop with us, and celebrate 50 years of Berkshire Hathaway with us.

Here’s to 50 more!

How to Play Ping Pong, Bridge and Chess at Borsheims

Sunday, May 4th, 2014

Berkshire Hathaway weekend veterans likely already know the ins and outs of playing the games at Borsheims.

But we gain several new shareholders each year, so it is worth repeating.

We have several different games happening just outside of Borsheims today (in the center court of Regency Court). Here is how you can join in the fun!

The experts, Sharon Osberg and Bob Hamann usually arrive between noon and 1pm. We do not know if Warren Buffett or Bill Gates will play bridge this year, but they usually sit down for several hands.

CHESS This is really amazing to watch – and likely your last opportunity to catch this. Patrick Wolff is a two-time U.S. Chess Champion and Grandmaster. He will play six people at the same time while blindfolded. It’s incredible to see. If you want to be one of the six people to try to beat Patrick, you can sign up at the chess table starting at noon. At 1pm, we will draw the names of the six people who will play. You must be there at 1pm when your name is called in order to have a seat.

Playing the Games at Borsheims During Berkshire Sunday

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

In addition to the delicious brunch, the amazing shopping and the fun reunions with other Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, one of the highlights at Borsheims during Sunday’s Berkshire Hathaway shareholder-only shopping day is the games.

We bring in experts at bridge, chess, magic and table tennis to amuse and amaze.

Here’s how you can take part on Sunday (May 5):

BRIDGE Bridge is again upstairs this year on the second floor of Regency Court. Anyone is welcome to play as long as they know how to play bridge. It helps if you already have your foursome put together, but if you’re solo come upstairs and sign up and we’ll try to get a group together for you. If you want to be one of the six people to try to beat Patrick, you can sign up at the Media/Info kiosk in the center of Regency Court starting at noon. At 1pm, we will take the list over to the chess area and draw the names of the six people who will play. You must be there at 1pm when your name is called in order to have a seat.

Olympian vs. Oracle of Omaha? Only Berkshire Hathaway Weekend!

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

She’s a late addition to the roster of events for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend 2013, but Ariel Hsing is no stranger to Berkshire shareholders.

Here is the young Olympic table tennis star last year, taking on all shareholders who dared!

Ariel Hsing plays Warren Buffett and Bill Gates

We received word from Warren Buffett’s office that Ariel Hsing has agreed to come back and play shareholders at Borsheims once again! She will be in the center court of Regency Court on Sunday during the shareholder-only shopping day (May 5). She will begin to play around 1pm and although in the past couple of years she has played both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates (often at the same time!), we are not sure if the billionaires are taking her on this year. We know Mr. Buffett is busy selling jewelry at Borsheims at 1pm, so maybe if he reaches his $2 million sales goal early enough, he’ll get in a few hits of the paddle with this Olympian.

Welcome back Ariel! We are glad to have you in Omaha again and excited to see you defeat a series of shareholders for yet another year!

Warren Buffett, Bill Gates Play an Olympian

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

How many billionaires does it take to beat Olympic Table Tennis player Ariel Hsing?

We know one (Warren Buffett) didn’t beat her last year.

Two at the same time (Warren Buffett and Bill Gates) can’t beat her either!

What if they used a giant paddle?

I’m pretty sure the Olympian still won. We are confident with this type of training, she’ll come home with the Gold Medal this summer!
