Buffett’s Letter: What’s New for the Shareholders Meeting

February 28, 2015

There are so many pieces of information to gain from reading Warren Buffett’s annual letter to shareholders (or in this year’s case – letters to shareholders!).

One of our favorite reasons to read is for insight into what’s going on during the annual shareholders’ meeting – scheduled this year for the weekend of May 1 – 3.

Believe it or not, even though we at Borsheims host two big events for shareholders during the weekend, we are sometimes surprised by Mr. Buffett’s plans for the weekend. It makes for a fun morning, learning about all great shareholder events we have to look forward to in just two short months.

So here is the rundown on what’s new and what to look forward to for this year’s annual shareholders weekend:

– Berkshire Hathaway’s golden anniversary is sure to draw huge crowds. The 39,000 people attending last year set a record, and Mr. Buffett expects even larger crowds this year.

Shoppers crowd Borsheims booth at the CenturyLink Center's Berkyville during the 2014 annual meeting.

– The exhibit hall at the CenturyLink Center (Berkyville, as it’s come to be known) will be open Friday and Saturday for shareholder shopping. The Friday hours – from noon to 5 – are new! I know several of the booths sold out of items last year, so here’s hoping they bring more inventory this year for the extended hours. I know our Borsheims booth will be stocked with jewelry items and memorabilia, from the affordable to the higher end. We are planning to have plenty of items for everyone to buy no matter which day they visit us. (See what we sold there last year for an idea of what may be on the menu this year).

– Several booths will have special Golden Anniversary items for sale. Mr. Buffett specifically mentions a book from the Bookworm commemorating 50 years. Our Borsheims team is producing several special items, all with a gold theme. A gold pen and a gold jewelry box are just the start. Know that we’ll definitely have some gold jewelry you can put in that jewelry box, too!

– There will be a tiny parade to kick things off Saturday morning. A parade at 6:20am. Featuring two Texas longhorns named Norman and Jake. Ridden by Justin Boots execs. Followed by four horses pulling a Wells Fargo stagecoach. Of course.

The rest of the weekend’s events look very similar to prior years events.

Friday, the Borsheims cocktail party is the place to be (if we do say so ourselves!).

Saturday is the annual meeting, all the awesome Berkyville shopping, and the Nebraska Furniture Mart picnic at night.

Sunday is the shareholder-only shopping day back at Borsheims. In the afternoon, come and watch Mr. Buffett (usually joined by Bill Gates) play Olympian table tennis star Ariel Hsing. We also have a magician and bridge experts there for entertainment.

Sunday evening, Mr. Buffett encourages you to eat at one of his two favorite steakhouses – Gorats or Piccolos.

Then we’ll allow you to return to your homes, stuffed with steak and root beer floats, laden with Borsheims boxes and Nebraska Furniture Mart delivery slips, and exhausted from a very fun and incredibly memorable weekend.

Here’s to 50 years and seeing you in 61 days!

Sounds like a grand affair! Kudos to Borsheims for always taking care of shareholders. The only note we would make this year is to let the water flow till the end. The drinks stopped abruptly, which for alcohol and sodas are fine, but please let the water be available, even tap is OK. One can get thirsty with all the networking going on. As a thought, perhaps a cash bar after 9:00pm, to mitigate any expenses. Hotel, air and car all checked for this year! We are looking forward to the additional shopping day on Friday! Just like last year, we will be tweeting from our seats and taking pictures throughout the weekend. See you then. 🙂

Thanks for the feedback! I will pass your suggestion on to the team that manages the bar. It’s a great suggestion. We look forward to seeing you in May.
